Sent rarely, and only when an issue is finished. Ideas on brand, instinct, and the craft of building something that lasts.
Orange Moon is the editorial layer of Margin Notes — the studio blog — sent when something is finished.
It's also brand new. Issue 01 hasn't gone out yet. I'm telling you that because the alternative is letting you assume there's an archive behind this page, and there isn't.
Each issue takes one idea apart. Slowly, and without much cheer about it, which most newsletters have been trained out of.
The name does some work. An orange moon sits low and heavy on the horizon, unusual enough that people stop and look at it, slightly unsettling if you catch it at the wrong hour. That's the register.
Instinct is not the feeling you had before thinking. It is the feeling you have after thinking enough times that the thinking has become structure.— David A. León Contreras · Issue 01
Every issue stakes one thing on the record. A position with a cost attached — something a prospective client could read and flinch at. It doesn’t get softened for the room, and it doesn’t get quietly removed later when it turns out to be wrong.
The first one is about what waiting costs. It arrives with Issue 01.
The finished shape is four layers, surface to core. Not every issue will have all four — early ones won't. The diagram is the destination, not a promise about issue one.
In a world where anyone can generate an image with a single prompt, the ones who will stand out are those who understand why an image should be created in the first place.
